Windows 7 mania? Personally, I’m waiting for Windows 8

Despite reports that six out of 10 companies plan to skip Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows 7, heavily discounted pre-orders for the OS overwhelmed the Microsoft Store yesterday.
“Due to the eagerly anticipated Windows 7 pre-order offer we’re experiencing a higher level of demand on our website than usual,” Microsoft said as its Euro website slowed to the speed of dripping treacle.
“This means you can’t access the site right now and we’re sorry about that. We’ll be back up and running as soon as we can so please try again soon to get your hands on a copy of Windows 7!”
What’s the rush? Windows 7, which officially goes on sale on October 22, is currently available at knock-down prices. A copy of Windows 7 Home Premium in the UK can be had for a mere £49.99 (reduced from £149.99), while the Windows 7 Professional edition is £99.99 (normally £219.99).
But you’d better be quick… Microsoft says that the pre-order offer is available at participating retailers and through the Microsoft Store between July 15th 2009 and August 9th 2009.
Why is Microsoft slashing its prices? In many ways, it’s an apology for Windows 7′s god-awful predcessor, Windows Vista.
“Our customers have been critical in making Windows 7 great,” says Microsoft, “and we didn’t feel words alone were enough to express our appreciation. That’s why we’re saying thank you by giving you a chance to be among the first to get Windows 7, and at a special price.”
